Mating Game

Think of the word “nightclub” and most often an image of a crowded, noisy space full of people dancing or waiting in line for a drink comes to mind. Typically, the nightclub experience is about people; people dancing, people drinking, people trying to carry on a conversation shouting above the noise. But what about the quiet space in between the people, the overlooked areas that provide a respite from the intensity of a nightclub? Take a moment to look beyond the seething mass of humanity and you find truly amazing examples of color, line and form.

In this series of photographs called Nocturne, I have chosen to focus on what is often overlooked- the details of a nightclub: the architectural fixtures illuminated by color, the state-of-the-art visuals, the unusual decorations, the surreal lighting that evokes a certain mood, and the people interacting with this unique environment. The more I looked the more beauty I found in the seemingly unimportant details. I also became aware of the emotional undercurrent that lingers just below these surfaces that is a contradiction of light and dark, warm and cold, but always colorful. Perhaps no other place can produce such a high contrast environment rich in emotion and imagery as the nightclub.
